Dengue Cases Surge in Bukidnon: Over 5,000 Cases Recorded in 2024
As of August 2024, over 5,000 dengue cases have been reported in the province of Bukidnon, significantly surpassing the 4,000 cases recorded during the same period in 2023. The Provincial Health Office (PHO) has confirmed that at least 17 individuals have succumbed to the disease, although an official outbreak has not yet been declared.
Malaybalay City stands out with the highest number of dengue cases, totaling 926, closely followed by Valencia City with 508 cases. Both cities have reported two fatalities each due to dengue.
In response to the increasing number of cases, the local government of Malaybalay City has initiated fogging operations in affected areas. Additionally, the PHO has distributed treated mosquito nets to several schools to help mitigate the spread of dengue-carrying mosquitoes.
Bukidnon PHO Dengue Coordinator, Sergio Flores, emphasized the importance of maintaining cleanliness to prevent the breeding of mosquitoes. "If you don't clean it, the fogging won't be effective because mosquitoes will return once they find water," he stated.
Health officials continue to remind the public about practicing the 5S habits against dengue: Search and Destroy, Self-Protection, Seek Early Consultation, Support Fogging, and Sustain Hydration. While discussions regarding the declaration of a state of calamity are ongoing, authorities remain focused on controlling the spread of this vector-borne illness through proactive measures and community engagement.
